09:17 pm - an evening
I stayed somewhat late at work because of an emergency that I discovered last night. (I don't cause trouble, but I'm reeeeeeeaallll good at finding it!)

Then I went to the gym. Had I said that Thursday was the magic day to go to the gym, day of fabled parking spots and treadmills? I lied. Thursday is now almost as unpleasant as Tuesday or Wednesday, except that there was miraculously *one* parking spot and *one* treadmill free. While I know I shouldn't be greedy, as one of each is all I need, I am finding the overcrowding really unpleasant. I've made a list of some options to try in the upcoming weeks. Not that I'm going to have time, but it's nice to have a plan.

I stopped by CVS before the gym but they didn't have the brand of battery I wanted. Oh well.

Then I came home and found that there is to be no parking on our side of the street tomorrow morning due to "trees". Heaven alone knows. And I'm also completely unaware of where the hell my husband is at the moment. Oh well, that's about to be more tea for me then. As soon as I can get out from under this cat.

(Hah! Speak of the devil and he will phone you up from the bar. Some people. :P)

06:47 pm - Busy weekend!
Yesterday I got up far too early to go to dragon boat practice, the first of the season. Yay, we succeeded in having a practice. We had enough people to move a small boat, and we even ran into our ex-coach and sweet-talked her into coming out and coaching us. (Which was good, because we didn't actually have a plan for what we were going to do once we got on the boat.) Our fearless captain remembered the big folder o waivers, and is certified to steer, without which it would have been a really short practice. So yay, I didn't even have to kill anybody.

I'm still worried and think we should be doing more recruiting. If we're having this much trouble rounding up 10 people to have practice, it's going to be an utter joy trying to round up 20 so we can have a race. :P

Meanwhile, my darling husband had been trying in vain to start the crappy old lawn mower that came with the house. So once I got home & had lunch, we went shopping. We came home from Lowes with a lawn mower, a new leaf blower/sucker, and a weed whacker. Much yard work ensued (as well as laundry and dishwashing).

We tried valiantly to stay awake through the Malaysian Grand Prix. I think [info]stuartc even succeeded. I definitely dozed off a few times. Apparently no one ran into Kubica's car this time, and he came in second after Raikonnen. Huzzah!

Today we slept in. More yard work and washing of things happened today. [info]stuartc cleaned up the garage a bit, and we took down the Christmas lights.

Zoot (a.k.a. Tiny Kitten) has been in some sort of snit the past couple of days. She's currently attacking the inside of the couch directly underneath me. We dragged her out from under the bed this morning to verify that she's still breathing, not injured, and seems physically okay; but she's been skulking among several hidey-holes all weekend and not eating or drinking much. Crazy cat. Hopefully she'll get over it. Meanwhile Princess has been enjoying the relative peace and quiet.

09:14 pm - Thursday...
... apparently Thursday is the day to go to the gym.

Lots of empty parking spots, choice of treadmills, didn't have to wait for any machines, and the music was OUTSTANDING. I even jogged a bit to Squeeze's "Hourglass".

And there's dragon boat practice this Saturday. Finally!

08:43 pm - *bink*!
For absolutely no reason that I can discern, I am suddenly feeling downright perky. Given that I haven't felt like doing a damn thing for what feels like months now, this is kind of cool.

Oddly, I first detected the signs of perkiness while on my way TO a dental appointment. I have no idea what any of it means; I'm just going to go with it.

11:29 pm - I started it!
I started the gigantic stitching project of DOOOOOOOOOOM.

There was much swearing, but I marked the centerlines, taped the edges, and wrestled the fabric into the huge scroll frame I bought earlier this evening. I then discovered that the purple masking tape, while purple, is evil in every other way imaginable, and ripped most of it off. Then I *actually* got the fabric into the frame in a more functional way, and started stitching.

So far I have done two of the ripples in the water. Without the actual water of course. But it's started!

Pictures will be posted at some point. Yes, I am taking pictures already; deal with it.

12:22 am - Hmm.
My brain has just challenged me to design and implement "Art Gecko".

I'm not sure if this means I should drink less whisky while cross stitching, or more.

08:20 pm - I called it Stormy Monday...
... and it was pretty good.

I just got back from an open blues jam in Long Beach, and boy are my ears tired.

I think I used up all of my extrovert points for the year being chatted up by strange drummers. Oh well, that's what I get for playing bass.

It was fun though. I've already made a list of songs I know, used to know, and/or sort of know, to consider for next time.

09:07 pm - Score..... sorta.
So I went to Jo-Ann's with a list and a plan... to find out that they only carry DMC embroidery threads, not Anchor. Bah! I grumpily prodded the selection of purple and verified that it just won't do. Now to panic... I mean research.

I did however get a piece of 16-count Aida which was exactly the size called for plus one inch in each direction, plus the Light Effects thread I needed. On a whim I headed to the magazine section, where they had ONE COPY LEFT of the January Cross Stitcher (with the giant Art Deco chart). Score!

I also bought a couple of pairs of silly and comfortable shoes to wear as the weather gets warmer, but failed utterly to get an emergency backup pair of jeans. Oh well, time to hit the gym until I fit back into the smaller ones. (I may rant later about capris, but I'm just too tired right now.)

Also, Xump had one 5x5 rubik's cube in the window, but it was the crappy Winning Moves one, which the nice salesgeek agreed was utter rubbish and under no circumstances should I buy it. I assume she was NOT working on commission! (-:

09:14 pm - out of my mind
Just picked up the February issue of Cross Stitcher a couple of days ago.

I've already re-mapped the colors for the Art Deco Lady (the dress needs to be purple, duh) and am about to scout materials for a test-stitch to see if I can fix the contrast issue with the black vs the charcoal grey.

As if I don't have enough projects already started?

*and* I need a stitchy icon.

(Doing a Google image search for "cross stitch icon" yields a most amusing result of "Hot Nintendo Cross-Stitch Action" on page 2... I'm scared...)

08:40 pm - Getting out more
So for about a month now, I've been fighting off a rotten cold. Or something. I'm now fever-free and mostly sniffle-free, but still have about zero energy or focus. I've missed a couple of days of work, and even when I'm there I've been firing on about two cylinders max.

This past Monday I was feeling almost better, so I braved the gym. I did 20 minutes walking on the treadmill, and it damn near killed me. Sigh.

Today was a relatively active day. I went out with a group of cow orkers for a farewell lunch (cleverly got someone else to drive), and after work I indulged in some retail therapy at Barnes & Noble. I also shopped for some necessary bits and bobs at Trader Joe's, where I miraculously did not kill anyone.

For the future, even more ambitious plans have been thrust upon me. I have a dragon boating coaching clinic far too early on Saturday morning, and an open blues jam thingy two Sundays hence, both in Long Beach. Am currently v glad we moved south, still hoping the rain stops before I have to drive to anything far away.

I feel a bit like I'm waking up from a long nap. It will be good to get out more. Who knows, one of these years we may even get around to having a housewarming party...

07:17 pm - Eclipse!
I wasn't even going to bother looking for the lunar eclipse because it was so cloudy. Then some time around 4:30 or so it got incredibly windy, and all the clouds went away!

I saw the eclipse approaching totality as I was leaving the office, around 6:40 PST. That was really cool. Actual totality is, of course, incredibly boring. I'll go out around 7:50 and see if I can see it come back, or it might be behing a building or another cloud by that point.

Mmm science.

06:28 pm - I don't get it.
So there seems to be some sort of "obesity epidemic" going on, or so the news outlets shriek at us daily. I've seen recent articles on the Beeb and in the LA Times about how it's not our fault: the nasty-bad corporations and "food manufacturers" and so forth are saturating our environment with cues to overeat. This one in the LA Times (Cue the gluttony) goes so far as to say that we need to change the environment of our daily lives; apparently this means LAWS "regulating portion size, labeling or the places where food can be sold or eaten."

First and foremost: Good god, spare me. If you criminalise bacon, I'm on the next plane to New Zealand and not coming back.

Second, spare a thought to wonder what the hell ever happened to personal responsibility. How on earth they'd ever enforce such BS comes in at a distant third.

Here's the thing I don't get though. Why is everyone so certain that overeating is the problem, as opposed to (say) lack of exercise? Or the shift to manufactured, chemicalized foods? Or the increased stress and reduced sleep of modern life? Or some combination of the above?

There is more going on here than too many trips to Dunkin' Donuts, people. We've had Dunkin' Donuts for 60 years, and we've had ice cream a hell of a lot longer than that. Is this just a media plot to distract us from world events, or is there something sinister happening?

02:08 pm - Sometimes my knowledge of trivia amazes even me.
Apparently at least two of my cow orkers have ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW why, if you microwave a mug of water and then put a tea bag in, the water fizzes and bubbles madly.

Now they know, because I gave them the full physics explanation of it, complete with liberal usage of the phrase "nucleation sites".

Apparently this made several people's day. It certainly made mine.

(As a bonus, I never actually make tea that way.)

09:12 pm - today
More housework, some shopping, some plotting of post-Christmas shopping. Discovered that flexibility is key when looking for lunch at 3 PM on Christmas Eve.

Product selection aside, Lowes has MUCH better music than Home Depot. The last couple of days Lowes has been in a '70s and '80s time warp, whereas Home Despot has treated us to some very disturbing Muzak. It bothers me very slightly that I'm spending enough time in these stores to know such things.

I could definitely get used to this slouching-around-the-house thing. Heaven help me, I think I've even caught up on my sleep. Already!

Merry Christmas to you folks on the right coast!

08:12 pm - We came, we saw, we shopped
We got up early this morning and spent FAR too much money at Lowes for kind of a lot of power tools. Still no magazine rack.

I also got all of [info]stuartc's presents wrapped and put under the tree. Curse you, odd-shaped presents! Next year I swear anything non-Euclidean is getting put in a box and THEN wrapped.

Am currently trapped under a warm kitten. Luckily there is tea nearby.

11:14 pm - mmm, Christmas break
Already vastly enjoying the 11-day weekend. Today we took Zoot (a.k.a. Tiny Kitten) to the vet for her second round of shots, and did a bunch of shopping. Not only did we voluntarily go into Target on the Saturday before Christmas, it was *my idea*.

We've re-collared all three cats, and have made plans for further shopping and a woodworking frenzy. I am feeling very relaxed and have even been overheard humming various seasonal tunes.
