 | 11:31 pm - Started the new big project... ... okay, I haven't made any actual stitches yet, but the fabric is cut and framed and the centerlines are in place. Oh boy is this stuff flexible. I am doooooooooooomed again. Current Mood: sleepy

 | 10:41 pm - Holy crap, I finished something! Started back in February, which now seems like several lifetimes ago. Put down in early August before vacation. Just picked it up again this evening and... if I'd realised it was that close to done, maybe I would have picked it up earlier. (Or maybe not... the metallic fractional backstitches are SO EVIL!)
( clicky here! ) Current Mood: relieved

 | 06:33 pm - New toy! Today we made a road trip to Oceanside to pick up the new telescope. It's a Celestron Omni XLT 150R 6-inch refractor and it is very spiffy.
We also walked around Oceanside a bit. It's a pretty beach town in San Diego County, it was a gorgeous day and we'd just driven 80 miles so we thought we'd have a look round. We had lunch and watched the surfers wipe out. Now we're back home waiting for it to get dark.
Stuart has helpfully taken a picture of the telescope with me standing next to it for scale.
... My bad, apparently it's dark enough now. More later.

 | 08:38 pm - The new kitchen is FINISHED! Time from start of work to end of work: 3.5 weeks. (So the time from start of design to end of work was more like 3.5 months... we'll ignore that part...)
I can't stop squeeing long enough to put anything away! I'm making hard boiled eggs in a real saucepan and I am going to drain them in a real kitchen sink! Also, holy cow those sinks are deep. I may have gone a bit overboard on that part. (Now if I could just keep the damn cat out of the sink...)
We now return you to your regularly scheduled wild evening of chasing cats around and putting cones back on their heads. Current Mood: pleased

 | 10:56 pm - yay, that's better Mt Wilson has been declared safe.
Also, we have discovered that XM Classic Rewind puts the kitten to sleep. Now if we could just sleep through that we'd be all set... Current Mood: amused

September 1st, 2009
 | 10:05 pm - Bah. :-) Rumours of Mt Wilson's imminent fiery demise are apparently greatly exaggerated. A sensible person is blogging about the fires here: http://joy.chara.gsu.edu/CHARA/fire.php
I got sucked in to LA Times' hysteria? I must be more tired than I thought. Current Mood: hot

 | 09:49 pm - Zoot is home! Zoot is home from the kitty hospital! Huzzah!
She's confined to the big cage, with the "no jumping" rule in force, and she is currently sulking; but home nonetheless. Current Mood: relieved

 | 07:20 pm - Happy moon day! 40 years ago today, my parents & my big brother & I watched people walk around on the moon.
That's *still* really cool.

Formula 1 has been thrown into chaos after eight of its major teams said they are now planning to set up a rival championship for the 2010 season. ... Current Mood: surprised

 | 11:11 pm - Crazy new exercise thing, day 2 I like it! You can set up a routine and just go. The trainer is WAY less annoying than the Wii Fit one -- at least so far (and you can turn down the chattiness, I checked).
There are still only so many exercises you can do whilst clutching a Wiimote, but these people are pretty darned creative about some of them.
I don't think the sporty games have a lefty mode, which will be irritating for some people.
Also, I suck at catching baseballs, even virtual ones. I'm not actually surprised. (I do apparently have a mean backhand though! The tennis and boxing are awesome for taking out one's pent-up aggressions.) Current Mood: hot

May 20th, 2009
 | 11:33 pm - EA Sports Active.... OMG, it's Wii Fit for grownups!
No yoga, but the rest of the exercises are damned impressive. My squat muscles are sore already. (-: Current Mood: impressed

March 4th, 2009
 | 07:14 pm - Progress Good news: I have finished all of the regular backstitch.
Bad news: There is now nothing standing between me and the metallic backstitch. I'm really not looking forward to that.
Pics soon. Current Mood: accomplished

March 3rd, 2009
 | 07:15 pm - Oh all right I've joined the herd that is Facebook. It didn't occur to me to stick my maiden name in there until it was too late, oh well.
Come find me and tell me what there is to do there.
p.s. I am now going to step AWAY from the computer! Current Mood: sheeplike

 | 07:40 pm - random bits Did some more stitching on the cross stitch lady of dooooooom. GAH, someone needs to be slapped for recommending doing this on aida. Sadly I've already agreed to do the same picture for a friend in shades of pink. Maybe for the next one I'll make up some art deco mittens. :P
Started trying to play Rock Band 2 songs on Hard mode. Ow. Only got booed off the stage once (that will teach me not to trust "simple" mystery set lists!). Am occasionally adopting the strategy of just skipping all the orange notes. Sigh.
Have realised that work stress is getting to me way too much. There's too much ambient stupidity; I never seem to discharge the current Mad quickly enough before the next one comes along. Oh well, awareness is the first step. Silly post-its are the next ("stupid happens"), we'll see if that helps.
The new CJ Cherryh book ROCKS. I might need to go back and re-read Cyteen, but I'm not hopelessly lost. Yet.
Had a ton of sushi for lunch today. I feel like I may never get hungry again. We stopped for boba on the way back. I have tentatively decided that beverages should not be chewy.
DAMN YOU KENKEN! Current Mood: perky

February 18th, 2009
 | 09:18 pm - and in other news I have become thoroughly addicted to KenKen puzzles. (The ones at kenken.com are more challenging than the ones on nytimes.com on the crossword page.)
stuartc and I got out of the house last weekend and saw Coraline in 3-D. That was .... I'm sure "lovely" is the wrong word, but I can't think of a better one right now.
In other other news, my spell checker is happy with the name "Coraline" for some reason. Current Mood: hungry

 | 09:01 pm - Accomplishments for the evening Tonight on the Wii Fit, I did "Perfect Moves" at the advanced step aerobics. I also rather thoroughly trounced my previous high score on the advanced Table Tilt balance game, which is still incredibly evil (but which has me wondering whether there's one more "expert" stage...).
Go me! Current Mood: accomplished

February 8th, 2009
 | 09:36 pm Went to the gym on Thursday and Saturday (cancelled my membership after my workout on Saturday for, basically, the reason that I should not belong to a gym in LA).
I've been playing on the Wii Fit pretty consistently for 4 days a week for the past few months. That's not necessarily what I'd call vigorous exercise though. It'll be interesting to see what I end up doing next. Current Mood: tired
